Mongo received his “Wings of Gold” in 1987 and served as an Instructor Pilot on the T-2 Buckeye for his first tour. He was subsequently assigned to the FA-18 community and reported to the "Sunliners" of VFA-81 in July 1990, just in time to cruise on the “Super Sara” for what turned into Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM.
Mongo went on to fly a total of 25 combat sorties during Operation DESERT STORM. He returned to the Mideast in 1998 and supported Operation SOUTHERN WATCH enforcing the no-fly zone over southern Iraq. In 2006, he returned to the Mideast for the 3rd time and Commanded the "Redcocks" of VFA-22, an FA-18 Super Hornet squadron, and supported Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and the Global War on Terror.
During Mongo's shore tours he served as an Adversary Instructor in VF-45, FA-18 flight instructor in VFA-106 and TOPGUN Executive Officer and Tactics Instructor.
Mongo's decorations and achievements include the Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Strike Air Medals with Combat V, three Navy Commendation Medals two with Combat V, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards. He has accumulated over 5500 flight hours and nearly 700 arrested landings.
